Dai Sijie is a Chinese-born filmmaker & novelist who has lived & worked in France since 1984. His first novel, Balzac & the Little Chinese Seamstress, was an overnight sensation; it spent 23 weeks on the New York Times bestseller list. He has also written Mr. Muo’s Traveling Couch & Once on a Moonless Night.
An award-winning British translator, Adriana Hunter has translated over ninety books from French, mostly works of literary fiction. She continues to enjoy the buzz of identifying promising francophone authors & finding English-language publishers for them. She won the 2011 Scott Moncrieff Prize for her translation of Beside the Sea (Bord de Mer) by Véronique Olmi (Peirene Press, 2010) & the 2013 French-American Foundation & Florence Gould Foundation Translation Prize for her translation of Hervé Le Tellier’s Electrico W, & her translations have been shortlisted twice for the Independent Foreign Fiction Prize (now the Man Booker International Prize). Hunter has translated three other books for Peirene Press: Under the Tripoli Sky by Kamal Ben Hameda (2014), Reader for Hire by Raymond Jean (2015) & Her Father’s Daughter by Marie Sizun (2016).
