Towards a method of testing harpsichord soundboards
John Rawson
Author describes a low-tech method of visualizing vibrations in a soundboard. A soundboard is clamped into place in an instrument, glitter, coffee, or sugar is scattered on the surface of the soundboard, and the soundboard is excited at the location of the bridge with a sine wave oscillator coupled to a transducer. The debris moves to nodes of the standing wave induced in the soundboard, tracing an outline of the standing wave on the surface (a Chladni pattern).
